Wine importers in India connect overseas wineries with local distribution, hospitality and retail channels, but market entry needs to be planned state by state. Choose a partner for the locations, customers and price points you can serve. A national portfolio does not mean that every label has an active route to sale in every state.
Company profiles updated 28 September 2026. A practical guide for wineries and export managers.
Start with a state-level launch plan
Define a manageable first territory and channel before discussing nationwide representation. A proposal for restaurants in Mumbai needs a different operating plan from one aimed at retail customers in another state. Ask the importer which local entities, approvals and distribution arrangements will support each wine.
Maharashtra’s official label-registration guidance, for example, has a separate procedure for overseas imports into the state. Treat this as an illustration of the local work required, not a checklist that can be reused unchanged elsewhere.
Prepare a limited opening range. Each additional label should have a commercial purpose, realistic stock allocation and a buyer willing to support it. Our export market selection guide can help compare that commitment with opportunities in other destinations.

Company-level facts: BestWineImporters database records reviewed 28 September 2026. These examples illustrate business models, not a ranking or a list of open buying requirements. Locations identify company bases rather than sales territories. Product categories are not necessarily exhaustive. The qualification points are editorial guidance rather than statements of buyer requirements.

Separate trade-agreement headlines from shipment pricing
India’s wine tariff treatment should be checked for the exact origin, product and shipment date. Do not apply one headline rate to every producer, or treat a negotiated tariff reduction as already available to a consignment.
The European Commission records the conclusion of EU–India FTA negotiations on 27 January 2026. Its published agreement texts explain that the agreement becomes binding only after the necessary internal legal procedures for entry into force. Check implementation and product eligibility before incorporating any proposed preference into a firm quotation.
Work with the importer on a state-specific Indian-rupee price model. Separate the export price, freight, customs treatment, local charges, storage and distribution margins. Ask who funds registrations and renewals, what happens if a label is discontinued and whether a smaller repeat order remains economic.
Prepare the wine for import and distribution
FSSAI’s Food Import Clearance System supports food import clearance alongside customs processes. Agree responsibility for current alcoholic-beverage standards, label review, documentation and any required inspection or testing before shipment. National food-import clearance and the arrangements for sale in a particular state are separate parts of the project.
Request a logistics plan covering temperature management, storage, onward transport and likely dwell times. Identify the party responsible for stock condition and quality complaints. A promising account list is of limited value if the wine cannot arrive and be replenished in good condition.
How to qualify an Indian wine buyer
- Define the portfolio gap. Compare origin, style and price with represented estates.
- Map the first territory. Name the target states, customer types and responsible distribution partners.
- Test the economics. Agree the opening range, order size, local costs and repeat-order assumptions.
- Specify support. Discuss staff education and appropriate trade activity, with local review of applicable promotion rules.
- Set the next decision. Confirm the sample brief, evaluation date and commercial terms before sending bottles.
Use our importer evaluation checklist to compare the evidence. Link any exclusivity request to defined territories, channels and performance reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Can one importer sell my wines throughout India?
A company may work across several states, but the arrangements for your labels need to be confirmed individually. Ask where the range can actually be sold, who serves the accounts and what approvals and costs apply.
Should a small winery offer its entire portfolio?
Start with a few wines that meet a specific buying need. A focused launch makes stock, registrations and sales support easier to evaluate.
What should the first email include?
Explain the portfolio fit and target territory, then provide relevant wines, prices, volumes and delivery terms. Our importer outreach guide helps structure the approach.
