Wine Importers in Finland: 10 Profiles & Alko Buyer Guide (2026)

Company profiles updated 28 September 2026. Market figures below refer to 2025 where indicated.

Finding wine importers in Finland starts with choosing a sales channel: Alko, restaurants and hotels, or licensed retail for eligible lower-alcohol products. A suitable partner needs the right portfolio, route to market and commercial plan for your wines. This guide explains how to assess Finnish buyers, prepare an offer and build a focused importer shortlist.

Finland’s wine market: what exporters need to know

Alko sold 65.7 million litres of alcoholic beverages in 2025, down 7.8% from the previous year, according to its 2025 annual report. These are Alko’s total alcohol sales, not Finland’s wine imports or total consumption. For wineries, the practical implication is to test a specific product and price opportunity rather than assume that a listing will generate growing volumes.

The retail channel depends partly on alcohol strength and production method. Since 10 June 2024, licensed retailers have been able to sell fermented beverages up to 8% ABV; the limit for other alcoholic beverages covered by those retail licences remains 5.5%. The Finnish licensing authority’s explanation sets out this distinction. Conventional imported wines above 8% ABV use Alko for domestic retail, while hospitality is a separate sales channel.

Compare the opportunity with your other export destinations using our guide to choosing wine export markets. A small allocation for restaurants and a product designed for a retail tender require different pricing, volumes and support.

How wineries can approach Alko

Alko’s general selection, seasonal selection and specialties use tender procedures. Producers, their authorised representatives, other eligible suppliers and importers can submit offers under Alko’s listing instructions. A winery should therefore distinguish eligibility to submit an offer from the operational arrangements needed to supply the product.

Start with a relevant tender and assess the full specification before committing samples: origin, style, price, volume, packaging, documentation and delivery timetable. Agree who submits the offer, handles communications and supplies the wine. Check the currently applicable Alko instructions and agreement terms for each project.

The sale-to-order selection follows a different route: offers can be made without a tender, and the seller handles importation with the required permissions. Availability to order does not mean a product will be stocked throughout Alko’s shops. Ask the partner how stock, delivery and customer demand will be managed.

Restaurant and lower-alcohol retail routes

For hospitality, evaluate the importer’s customer base and sales capacity. A list of restaurant accounts is only useful if the team can place your wine at a workable price, support staff tastings and secure repeat orders. Ask for a launch plan covering target venues, first shipment size, stock availability and follow-up.

For a lower-alcohol wine, establish its eligibility for the intended retail channel before developing a supermarket proposal. Then assess the buyer’s category, price and packaging requirements. Do not assume that access to grocery retail creates demand for every wine below the permitted strength.

Clarify who imports, warehouses, distributes and sells the product. Our explanation of wine importers, distributors and agents helps structure those discussions.

How to qualify Finnish wine buyers

  1. Choose the primary channel. Decide whether your first objective is an Alko tender, sale-to-order availability, restaurant placements or eligible licensed retail.
  2. Map portfolio fit. Compare your origin, grape varieties, style and price with the wines already represented. Explain the gap your range fills.
  3. Work backwards from the selling price. Agree assumptions for freight, taxes, warehousing, margins and channel costs before negotiating the winery price.
  4. Check delivery capability. Confirm import responsibilities, order frequency, lead times, minimum quantities and the treatment of slow-moving stock.
  5. Prepare product evidence. Supply technical sheets, ABV, vintage, bottle and case specifications, available volumes and substantiation for certification or environmental claims.
  6. Set commercial milestones. Discuss first orders, target accounts, reporting, payment terms and the scope of any exclusivity before committing the whole market.

Prepare a focused introduction

Lead with two or three wines that fit the buyer’s portfolio. Include origin, positioning, export price and delivery basis, annual availability, technical details and your proposed Finnish channel. For a tender opportunity, identify the specification your wine can meet. For hospitality, explain the intended menu price or by-the-glass role and available launch support.

Ask whether the range is relevant before shipping samples. Our wine importer email templates and follow-up strategy provide a structure for the first contact and subsequent discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Does a foreign winery need a Finnish importer to submit an Alko tender offer?

Alko permits producers and authorised representatives, as well as eligible suppliers and importers, to submit offers. Submission eligibility and supply responsibilities are separate questions. Review the applicable instructions and agree the import and delivery arrangements for your chosen route.

Can Finnish supermarkets sell wine?

Licensed retailers can sell eligible fermented beverages up to 8% ABV. This does not extend to conventional wines above that strength. Check the product’s category and the current licensing requirements before selecting the retail channel.

What should a winery send a Finnish importer first?

Send a short, relevant range proposal with export prices, available volumes, technical sheets and a clear channel objective. Explain the portfolio fit and agree the next step before sending samples.
