How this calculator works

The model follows the path every imported bottle takes through the US market: ocean freight and insurance to port, customs and federal excise, then the state-level excise, three-tier markups and sales tax that vary widely from one state to the next. Federal excise is driven by ABV and container size; state rules depend on whether the destination is an open or a control state.

Federal & state excise

Federal excise is applied per gallon by ABV band — $1.07 (≤14%), $1.57 (14–21%) and $3.15 (>21%), confirmed current for 2026. State excise is looked up per state and ABV bracket, with wholesale taxes and monopoly markups modelled separately so they aren't double-counted.

Section 301 tariffs

Earlier 25% tariffs on certain EU wines remain suspended. A possible 15% tariff has been discussed for late 2025; for now most EU origins (France, Italy, Portugal, Romania) enter without added Section 301 duty — subject to change.

Freight & exchange rates

Logistics costs have stabilised versus 2022–23, but EUR–USD has moved through the year. Adjust the per-case freight and your ex-cellar price to reflect current rates.

Labelling & certification

The TTB has issued clarifications on labelling and certification for imported wine — notably ABV tolerance and ingredient disclosure. Confirm compliance before shipping.

Rates reviewed: June 2026. Federal excise verified against current TTB / Tax Foundation figures; state excise, wholesale tax and monopoly-markup structure follow the GrapeXport reference model. Estimates are indicative and for planning only — they may not capture every local fee, franchise law, retroactive duty or contract term. Verify current federal, state and TTB requirements — and any applicable tariffs — with a licensed customs broker or importer before committing to a price.
